“To change the world, we must first change the way the babies are being born.”

The “Dance” of Brain Waves in Pregnancy and Birth

A woman who hasn’t managed to slow down during pregnancy will likely find it difficult to do so during labor as well. When the left hemisphere of the brain where logic, analysis, and control reside stays active, it becomes hard for her to surrender to instinct and allow her body to do what it’s naturally designed to do: give birth.

Fears and insecurities then take the lead, making labor more challenging. And modern medicalized birth, with its bright lights, constant noise, and interventions, rarely supports this essential state of deep relaxation.

The importance of relaxation

This is why learning to relax and slow down our brain waves during pregnancy is so important. A mother who can regulate her brain’s activity remains calm, intuitive, and deeply connected to her body. She can sense how labor is unfolding and trusts the process. As a result, birth becomes smoother, less painful, and often faster.

In a hospital setting, familiar tools like calming music, guided visualizations, or breathing techniques practiced during pregnancy can help maintain inner balance. At home, a birthing woman has even more ways to relax, from the warmth and quiet of her space to the comforting presence of her loved ones.

The brain waves of birth

During a natural, undisturbed birth, the mother’s brain waves shift. If we imagine them as waves of the ocean, each stage of labor becomes a different part of the journey:

Early labor – Beta waves
You’re standing on the shore. The waves crash around you, strong and confusing. You feel unsure, resisting the pull of the sea.

Dilation 0–5 cm – Alpha waves
You enter the water. You no longer fight the waves but move with them. The temperature feels just right, your body relaxes and begins to flow with the rhythm.

Dilation 6–10 cm – Theta waves
Thought disappears. Instinct takes over. You ride each wave with freedom and primal strength. You’re fully immersed in the power of creation.

Birth – Delta waves
Complete release. You become one with the wave, one with your body. There is deep peace, stillness, and awe. You simply flow.

Understanding this beautiful play of brain waves reminds us to honor the body’s natural wisdom. Birth is not only a physical event, it’s a profound mental, emotional, and spiritual journey that begins with relaxation and ends with the union of mind, body, and soul.
