What does a doula bring to birth? First and foremost, love and unwavering support, staying by the mother’s side, informing, encouraging, and keeping her spirits high.
And of course, she doesn’t arrive empty-handed. She brings her famous doula bag, a collection of tools and items designed to make labor more comfortable, supportive, and relaxing. Think of it as the legendary Sport Billy bag… but every item has a purpose!
The contents vary depending on the doula and the birth, but mine includes, besides the basics, a pilates ball and a professional birthing pool.
Some of the “big and small helpers” often found inside:
- Copy of the birth plan so the doula knows the mother’s wishes.
- Birthing pool for relaxation and relief at home.
- Pilates ball for back support, exercises, and comfortable positions.
- Rebozo for pain relief and helping the baby get into the optimal position.
- Labor position cards, different positions help labor progress.
- Affirmation cards for encouragement and focus.
- Pillows (regular and inflatable) for support in various positions and breastfeeding.
- Knee pads, heating pad, massage balls, oils, and tools.
- Combs, towels, cloths, fan, flashlight, dim lighting, and music.
- Mirror to observe progress in the final stage and baby latch.
- Anti-stress coloring pages, straw, throat candies, hair ties.
Each item serves a purpose: to relieve, support, and make birth a calmer, safer, and more beautiful experience. And the list keeps growing…
